Pink Ribbon

Pink Ribbon for Breast Cancer Awareness

This morning I received an email from a friend who has breast cancer. I am sure that like millions of women the world over, she would do anything to try to make sure that other women do not go through what she is currently eduring: a mastectomy, a second operation to remove lymph nodes and now chemotherapy.

Not to mention having to face her own mortality head on and cope with the worries and fears of her parents, partner and children.

I am also sure that she would desperately like to find an answer to the question:

Why me? What caused my cancer?

In big red letters, which certainly made me sit up and take notice, the email said:

No matter how many times you get this E-mail, Please send it on!!!! Bottled water in your car is very dangerous!

I immediately thought of the bottles of water that are always in my car. The ones that my daughters and I drink from all the time. But did I panic? No. Because I am always cautious when I get emails like this.

I carefully read the email through. Oh gosh! Sheryl Crow was on the Ellen Show and said that bottled water is what caused her breast cancer? And it must be true because her Oncologist said so? Dioxins in plastic bottles cause cancer?

Now wait a minute! I am no science specialist (I leave that to my Hubby) but I do know that no Oncologist can categorically pin down the specific cause of cancer in an individual. Even if they have suspicions they are not going to make such definite statements.

So I did what I often do when I get an email like this. Tootle off to Google and do a search. This search was:

Sheryl Crow plastic bottle dioxin hoax

BINGO!

My fav hoax slayer site came up with the goods: Plastics Cancer Link Email – Freezing Plastic Bottles – Plastics In the Microwave or Car

Various versions of this e-mail are examined and reassuringly Hoax-Slayer says:

An earlier variant of this hoax referred only to the freezing of plastic water bottles. This later version has added on spurious information about using plastics in microwave ovens as well. Both versions contain false and misleading information.

The site then goes on to debunk the hoax, point by point, with links to scientific references to back it up.

Sorted! No need to worry then. Phew!

But I remained very angry. These emails are horrible. They are preying on millions of vulnerable people who either have or who have had cancer. People who are often raw with worry or grief. People who care enough about their friends and family to want to keep them safe from harm.

These emails are sick!

And it is particularly sick during Breast Cancer Awareness month, when for many of us our thoughts are about people we know or have lost through cancer. My hubby lost his Mother, my ex lost his Mother too – both to cancer. I know four women who have been treated or who are currently being treated for cancer.

Lensmaster Lakeerieartists has recently published a lens: Pink October : The New Color of Fall .

There’s links to companies that are donating to various campaigns and why not Donate a Dollar yourself? Michael’s Way is a charity that helps the families of children with cancer to cope with the extraordinary non-medical expenses that come about as a direct result of the child’s illness.

If you want to do something positive and genuinely useful for Breast Cancer awareness then circulate Paula’s lens, NOT that email.

European honey bee

European honey bee

Internationally more and more people are taking an interest in the causes of the decline of the Honeybee and bees in general. As a keen gardener, who also enjoys attracting wildlife to her garden, I am always looking for ways to improve the conditions for the birds, honeybees and small animals that visit our backyard.

In the early Summer 2009 I published a Squidoo lens: The 10 Best Plants for Bees, which promotes planting flowering shrubs to help the bees. I was thrilled to be awarded a Purple Star for the lens on 09 July 2009.

Just recently I read about a £1m ($1.6m) grant that has been awarded to a Rothamsted, a British Research Institution and Warwick University to examine the reasons for the decline of the honeybee and information has been added to the lens.

Squidoo Purple StarYesterday I got a great surprise! An email from the Giant Squid Organisers to say that my Squidoo Lens Environmentally Friendly Halloween Lights has been awarded the huge honour of a Squidoo Purple Star.

This lens was not as easy to make as I thought it would be. Well, it got made easily enough but there was a delay. I applied to an affiliate via Share a Sale.com who was selling exactly the sort of environmentally friendly Halloween Lights I was looking for, only to be turned down!

It’s never happened before and I must admit I was stunned. Never one to give up (yep, I can be very stubborn at times, well I am on the cusp with Taurus) I went to the supplier’s main website and emailed them.

I ever so politely explained that I was desperate to be able to recommend their products because they were the only supplier I had found with exactly the lights I was looking for and would they please check out my lenses and would they please reconsider?

Oh alright then, they said. Sorted!

Then the folowing week I got turned down by another affiliate. I have yet to tackle that one BUT I am wondering if it was the Squidoo URL I used that put them off?

I don’t have a website (yet), so I either use my Lensmaster Bio page or one of my Lensographies when I apply for an affiliate program. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Picture this: a quiet harbour on the coast of Japan. Set against a picturesque backdrop of green hills, the houses surround the harbour of the small town of Taiji. Imagine the gentle lap of the sea against the wooden fishing boats. The sun shining, the sea a lovely blue – no, stop. The sea is not blue, it is not green. It is red, awash with the blood of thousands of dolphins.

From September to March, the local fishermen herd complete pods of dolphins into the harbour and then slash them to death with lances and knives.

Squidoo Lensmaster ChloeWhitelock1987 pulls no punches in her lens: Dolphin Slaughter in Japan. The lens is horrible. The photos distressing to any animal lover.

But the lens needs to be read!

Chloe tells us about a film documentary that is due for release this month: The Cove. Former dolphin trainer Ric OBarry (who trained the five dolphins who played Flipper in the TV series) joined forces with filmaker Louis Psihoyos and the Ocean Preservation Society to make this film highlighting this annual slaughter of dolphins and together they try to discover the truth about why this barbaric practice is still allowed.

Shockingly, there is also information about how UK Food Giant Tesco was also directly linked to the dolphin slaughter, through it’s ownership of a Japanese retailer who sold the meat. Tesco’s are now reported to have ceased trading in these products.

Chloe also tells us how we can join the Facebook campaign “Stop Dolphin Slaughter” and make a donation to the Save Japan Dolphins Coalition.

I could not bring myself to view the YouTube video that Chloe has embedded in her lens. I know I just could not bear it. But please go and visit the lens and help get the word out.

Lensmaster Cleanerlife (Dan) is establishing a great reputation for publishing very well researched lenses on not your normal run of the mill topics. And it is especially encouraging to me as a Squidoo Angel who watches over the Health and Medicine category on Squidoo, that he sometimes publishes lenses that fit in to this topic.

I was intrigued by the title of one of Dan’s lenses: Why you may want to try Hydrogen Peroxide Mouthwash. Hydrogen peroxide? In mouthwash? Whaaaaaat?

Isn’t that the stuff that “bleached blonds” use on their hair. Isn’t it a very strong chemical?

Well, yes, it is. But used in tiny quantities, Dan tells us that Hydrogen Peroxide is:

a safe alternative to popular brands of antiseptic mouthwashes

and gives enough info and links on the lens to convince us that he is right.

While we are talking about mouths, Dan has another lens that also makes important, and very worrying, reading for anyone who uses non-natural toothpaste. What Everybody Ought to Know About All Natural Toothpaste is full of some real horror stories!

If you want to make your own natural toothpaste then there is a recipe on my lens: Janey lee Grace.

But in the meantime, check out Dan’s lenses, there’s some great topics and they make for interesting reading.
